Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan has stated that the government will take strict legal action against drug traffickers, with no room for mercy or sympathy.

The minister made the remarks in a message posted on social media following the arrest of key figures of a drug-trafficking network in Addu City under Operation Alimagu, the nationwide anti-drug operation.

According to Ihusaan, police have been investigating drug trafficking and money laundering activities linked to the network’s leaders since March this year. He said that once investigations reach those responsible, only strict legal consequences will follow.

Ihusaan also revealed that the network has been operating for more than five years, during which over MVR 19 million was transferred to the accounts of four senior members.

He said the ongoing operation, initiated under the President’s directives, will continue to target drug traffickers across the country. The minister added that he has repeatedly urged those engaged in the trade to put an end to it.

His remarks come as Parliament has passed amendments to the Drugs Act, removing the possibility of amnesty for drug smugglers and introducing provisions that allow the death penalty for major drug-trafficking offences.
