Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan says the government aims to eliminate the backlog of prolonged pre-trial detainees in under two years.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Ihusaan said most detainees awaiting trial for long periods are suspects in serious crimes, including murder, major drug trafficking, violent assaults, and child sexual abuse.

He said a full review will be conducted with guidance from the Prosecutor General’s Office, using police intelligence and investigative assessments to determine who can be released and who poses a continued threat.

Ihusaan said delays caused by limited court infrastructure had previously left detainees waiting years without trial, but added that hearings have now begun moving more efficiently. A new Criminal Court building, expected during the current administration, is also intended to speed case processing.

According to the minister, the government is confident the backlog can be resolved within the targeted period.
