On the first leg of a brief trip to the Middle East, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock pledged $52.8 million in aid for Gaza Strip inhabitants on Thursday.
According to a statement from her ministry, Germany was also getting ready to send medical personnel into the Gaza Strip.
Baerbock said the purpose of her trip to the Middle East was to demonstrate "unwavering solidarity" and promote Palestinians' access to aid. Her visit, which also includes stops in Lebanon and Israel, began with her announcing the humanitarian initiative in Jordan.
“Our message is clear,” she said at a news conference in Amman with Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, according to her ministry.
“We don’t abandon the innocent Palestinian mothers, fathers, and children.”
On October 7, Hamas breached Israel's strongly defended Gaza border, murdering over 1,400 people—the majority of them were civilians—and capturing at least 199 hostages, according to Israel.
According to the Hamas-run health ministry, Israel's constant airstrikes on Gaza in response to the attacks have resulted in the deaths of more than 3,470 people—mostly civilians. The Palestinian enclave has also been under a brutal blockade, leaving its residents with decreasing access to food, water, and fuel.
