President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu attended the Merseyside derby between Liverpool FC and Everton on Wednesday evening, marking the official launch of the Maldives' tourism promotion campaign in partnership with Liverpool Football Club.
The collaboration between Liverpool FC and the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC)/Visit Maldives is a strategic effort to boost global visibility, attract more tourists, and strengthen the Maldives’ position as a top travel destination.
The Maldives was officially named Liverpool FC’s “Official Tourist Destination Partner” on March 13, kicking off a three-and-a-half-year global marketing campaign. The initiative aims to showcase the Maldives to football fans worldwide, leveraging Liverpool FC’s extensive reach and influence.
In addition to in-stadium branding at Premier League home matches, the campaign includes a large-scale outdoor promotion in the UK. Launched on March 27, the three-month effort features over 100 branded taxis in London, digital and physical advertisements on buses, the London Underground, major airports, and premium business-class lounges.
Billboards across Europe, along with extensive media placements in Liverpool FC’s official publications, are expected to enhance the Maldives’ visibility among high-value travellers.
President Muizzu was joined at the match by Tourism and Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim, Sports, Fitness, and Recreation Minister Abdulla Rafiu, MMPRC Managing Director Ibrahim Shiuree, and other senior government officials.
