Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr. Abdulla Muththalib has announced that water and sewerage services will be provided to all inhabited islands by the end of next year.
Speaking on the government’s infrastructure goals, Minister Muththalib said the previous administration had cancelled contracts awarded to Fenaka Corporation and reassigned the projects to Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC). MWSC is now in the process of obtaining the necessary permits and is confident of meeting the 2026 target.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has previously stressed that one of the most urgent challenges in outer islands—especially in the context of climate change—is the lack of access to water and sanitation. When the current government assumed office, only 86 out of 187 inhabited islands had access to water services, while 99 islands had sewerage systems.
Since then, Minister Muththalib said, the government has provided water services to 45 additional islands and sewerage systems to 40 islands. The remaining 56 islands without water services and 45 islands without sewerage services will be completed before the end of 2026, he assured.
