Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has decided to run in the upcoming presidential election, according to former Alifushi MP Mohamed Rasheed (Bigey), a close ally of Solih.

The announcement was made during a dinner event held in Malé with Solih’s supporters. The decision comes amid internal tensions within the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), as some senior party members have criticized Solih for conducting separate meetings with his supporters.

The development also follows the MDP’s preparations to formally dissolve The Democrats and welcome back former President Mohamed Nasheed into the party.

The dinner gathering was attended by several senior MDP figures, including Malé City Mayor Adam Azim, former Deputy Speaker Mohamed Aslam, and former Youth Minister Ahmed Mahloof, all of whom reportedly expressed their support for Solih’s candidacy.

Meanwhile, MDP Chairman Fayyaz Ismail, party president Abdulla Shahid, and MP Mohamed Shifaz of Hulhumalé constituency have all expressed their intention to compete in the party’s presidential primary.
