Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail announced the plan of establishing 11,500 tonne cold storages in Felivaru, Kooddoo and Hulhudhoo, Addu.
During a recent interview given to PSM, Minister Fayyaz spoke about the ongoing capacity building projects for Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company pvt ltd (MIFCO). Minister said that this includes a fish packaging facility development and establishing more cold storage facilities.
Minister said that the government wants to add value for the fish before exporting it to the other countries. So adding more cold storages will support it. He said that with the current limited cold storage, the fish has to be exported at a lower price suggested by the buyer as the fish cannot be kept in storage longer.
However, with establishment of additional cold storage facilities, the rate will be decided by the Maldivians and not the buyer. Minister said that in a case where the rate is too low, fish will be stored in cold storages.
Further in the interview, Minister highlighted that the upcoming year will bring huge changes to the fishing industry of the Maldives.
