Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdulla Shahid met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Saudi Arabia, H.R.H. Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, in Riyadh this Sunday afternoon.

During the meeting, the two Ministers exchanged updates on the ongoing situation of the Covid-19 pandemic in their respective countries. Minister Shahid applauded the leadership shown by Saudi Arabia at the G20 Summit in calling for cooperation to ensure fair and affordable access to Covid-19 vaccines and expressed his appreciation towards the G20 member states for the six-month relief granted on account of the Debt Service Suspension Initiative.

The Foreign Ministers discussed ongoing development projects in the Maldives, carried out with the assistance from the Government of Saudi Arabia, through the Saudi Fund for Development. Minister Shahid reiterated appreciation to the Government of Saudi Arabia for the generous assistance and expertise provided towards Maldives’ development journey over the years. Both the Ministers conversed on ways to further enhance cooperation between the Maldives and Saudi Arabia and explored additional areas for collaboration and exchange.

The two Foreign Ministers expressed their renewed commitment to strengthening the existing brotherly relations between the Maldives and Saudi Arabia and reaffirmed their confidence in working together on issues of mutual interest, both bilaterally and in the international fora.

Minister Shahid was accompanied by Ambassador of Maldives to Saudi Arabia, Mohamed Khaleel.
