The Ministry of Gender, Family, and Social Services has confirmed this Monday that the relevant authorities have initiated to provide temporary shelter for homeless people on the streets of Male’ City.

The authorities initiated the support following the attention brought by the media reports circulated about the homeless people living behind the local market at the Male’ City. The issue has brought a public backlash against the government authorities.

Following media reports, it is clear that many of the homeless people came to Male’ City for detox treatments, and with the delay in services and no jobs, most of them are forced to sleep on the streets and feed on garbage.

The Ministry of Gender has stated this Monday that the relevant authorities have started to support the basic needs of homeless people on the streets of Male’ City. As per the Ministry of Gender, the issue is addressed jointly with the support of Maldives Police Service, Local Government Authority, Maldivian Red Crescent Male’ Branch, Male’ City Council, National Drug Agency, and Home Ministry.

The Ministry of Gender has requested to share any information related to homeless people on the streets of Male’ City through hotline number 1421.
