In a parliamentary session today, Defense Minister Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon stated that the Ministry has obtained more insights into the devastating attack on President Nasheed, shedding light on the ongoing investigation and security measures surrounding the incident.

Minister Ghassan, addressing queries from members of the Parliament, disclosed that the Defense Ministry and the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) have recently obtained additional information regarding the attack on President Nasheed. He affirmed his readiness to share this crucial information with the Parliament upon request, emphasizing the importance of transparency in addressing such grave matters.

"I will be looking into the matter very closely. From what I have seen now, more information is in the Ministry of Defense to share with this House. However, the information can only be shared if you request it," Minister Ghassan stated, underlining the government's commitment to accountability and cooperation in the investigation.

Furthermore, Minister Ghassan reaffirmed the government's pledge to provide the utmost protection to President Nasheed, as mandated by law.

The attack, which occurred on May 6, 2021, involved an improvised explosive device (IED) planted on a motorcycle, detonated at a junction in Male' City. President Nasheed suffered serious injuries and underwent medical treatment abroad following the incident, highlighting the severity of the attack and its repercussions.

According to former Chief of Defense Force Major General Abdullah Shamal, the IED targeting President Nasheed was significantly more powerful than the 2007 explosion in Sultanpark. This revelation underscores the gravity of the attack and the sophisticated nature of the explosives used, raising pertinent questions about the motives behind the assault.

The criminal court has already sentenced an individual named Adhuham to 23 years, six months, and nine days in jail for his involvement in the May 6 IED blast.

As investigations into the attack continue, Minister Ghassan's disclosure of new information provides hope for progress in the pursuit of justice and security for all citizens.
