Former President Abdulla Yameen of the Maldives has formally requested permission to attend the upcoming formation meeting of the People's National Front (PNF), a newly proposed political entity in the country. This development comes as the Election Commission green lights for the party's founding assembly, following the successful collection of 3000 signatures in support of its establishment.

The specific date for the inaugural meeting of the PNF is yet to be announced. However, Mohamed Malih Jamal, the former Telecom Minister tasked with forming the party, expressed confidence that the details would be disclosed shortly.

According to Mohamed Malih Jamal, Yameen's legal team has formally requested authorization for his presence at the inaugural meeting.

Yameen's move to establish the PNF follows his resignation as the leader of the ruling coalition, the PPM/PNC, shortly after their ascent to power. The Election Commission approved the formation of Yameen's new party on November 29 last year, with his son, Zain Yameen, designated as its founder.

Despite serving a prison sentence, Yameen's custodial arrangements have been reduced, allowing him to serve his term under house arrest. The former president was sentenced to 11 years in prison after being found guilty of bribery and money laundering charges relating to the leasing of V. Aarah. Nevertheless, Yameen remains undeterred in his political aspirations, seeking to carve a new path in Maldivian politics through the inception of the People's National Front.
