Heena Waleed has stated that the release of former President Yameen Abdul Gayoom was through the judicial system without any influence from the current government. Heena Waleed, spokesperson for the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), announced it on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), praising President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu for upholding the rule of law.

Heena's statement came after the High Court overturned the four-year sentence imposed on Yameen in connection with the Criminal Court's 11-year imprisonment for bribery and money laundering linked to the leasing of V. Aarah island.

The High Court today heard an appeal against the 11-year jail term of seven years for money laundering and four years for accepting bribes in connection with the lease transaction of V. Aarah island and quashed the lower court's verdict.

Following the High Court verdict, PPM spokesperson Heena alleged that Yameen had been subjected to torture and imprisonment by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) for the past five years. She claimed that the MDP prevented Yameen from contesting the presidential election by influencing the courts and kept him incarcerated during Ramadan without relief.

In her post on platform X, Heena accused the former ruling party MDP of mistreating Yameen and celebrated his release through the judicial system without any interference from President Muizzu's government. She applauded President Muizzu for fulfilling his promise to maintain an independent judiciary.

"Today it was revealed that the MDP imprisoned and has been torturing President Yameen for the past five years. President Yameen was deprived of the opportunity to contest the presidential election by influencing the courts directly. And that the same MDP kept him in jail during Ramadan without any relief. Today, President Yameen was released through the judicial system. Without any influence in the government of Mohammed Muizzu. The President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, kept his promise. The President's lack of influence over the judiciary has been proven," Heena wrote in her post.

Yameen was sentenced to 11 years in prison by the Criminal Court on December 25 last year for accepting bribes and money laundering.
