Amid the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip, Hamas announced on Sunday, is set to deliver its response to Israel's latest counterproposal for a ceasefire. The talks are scheduled to take place in Egypt on Monday.
"A Hamas delegation headed by Khalil Al-Hayya will arrive in Egypt tomorrow... and deliver the movement’s response," stated an unnamed official to AFP. Egypt has been actively involved in mediating negotiations, alongside Qatar and the United States.
Efforts to broker a new Gaza truce have been ongoing since a one-week halt to the fighting in November, which saw the exchange of 80 Israeli hostages for 240 Palestinians held in Israeli prisons.
A senior Qatari official recently urged both Israel and Hamas to demonstrate "more commitment and more seriousness" in ceasefire negotiations. Despite global concerns and calls for a ceasefire, Israel has expressed intentions to invade Gaza’s southernmost city of Rafah.
Qatar, which hosts Hamas headquarters in Doha, has been pivotal in mediation efforts throughout the conflict. However, frustration has mounted as previous negotiations failed to yield a lasting truce. Qatar's Foreign Ministry spokesperson expressed disappointment in the lack of commitment from both sides and emphasized the urgency for renewed seriousness in reaching a deal.
The current state of negotiations remains uncertain, with both sides entrenched in their positions. As the talks continue, the situation in Gaza remains tense, with ongoing fighting and uncertainty about the prospects for peace
