In a firm and unwavering stance, the Government of Maldives has publicly condemned the ongoing attacks on Rafah by Israeli forces, labeling them as a severe violation of international humanitarian law. The escalation of military aggression against innocent Palestinian civilians in Gaza has only deepened the already dire humanitarian crisis in the region.

Amid these troubling developments, Israel's demands for the immediate evacuation of thousands of Palestinian civilians seeking refuge in Eastern Rafah have further underscored its disregard for the provisional measures ordered by the International Court of Justice (ICJ). These measures, established in response to the case "Application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip (South Africa v. Israel)", were intended to safeguard civilian lives and uphold international law.

In a show of solidarity with the Palestinian people, the Government of Maldives has announced its intention to intervene in the case brought forward by South Africa against Israel at the ICJ. The basis of this intervention lies in the assertion that Israel's actions constitute a blatant violation of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.

Furthermore, Maldives has thrown its full support behind South Africa's urgent request, made on May 10, 2024, for the modification and indication of further provisional measures by the Court regarding the situation in Rafah. This move signals Maldives' commitment to seeking justice for the Palestinian people and holding Israel accountable for its actions.

The Government of Maldives reaffirms its unwavering commitment to advocating for the inherent right to self-determination of the Palestinian people. It stands firm in its call for the establishment of a sovereign and independent State of Palestine, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with the pre-1967 borders.

As the crisis in Rafah continues to unfold, the Government of Maldives emphasizes the urgency of international intervention to address the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe and ensure the protection of innocent civilian lives.
