Fisheries Marine Resources and Agriculture Minister Ahmed Shiyam announced the establishment of tuna processing factories on F. Nilandhoo island and Gdh. Fiyoaree island during the inaugural session of the 18th INFOFISH World Tuna Trade Conference and Exhibition.

The new facilities are part of the government's broader strategy to reduce the export of frozen fresh tuna and increase local processing and value addition.

"To fulfill the vision tuna processing factories will be established in, F. Nilandhoo, and Gdh. Fiyoaree," Shiyam stated.

Minister Shiyam also shared the government's vision for the fisheries sector over the next five years, focusing on sustainability and reducing the industry's dependence on oil. He highlighted plans to increase the use of renewable energy in the fishing industry, aiming to ensure that 35 percent of the energy used in fish product processing plants is renewable. "Ensuring that fish products produced in the Maldives are from environmentally friendly resources is a key priority," he added.

The 18th INFOFISH World Tuna Trade Conference and Exhibition runs until the 23rd of this month in Thailand. The conference brings together industry leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders to discuss the latest trends and developments in the global tuna market.
