In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), the Foreign Ministry of Maldives expressed strong support for the recognition of Palestine by several countries and called on other nations to follow suit in supporting the Palestinian people's quest for an independent and sovereign state.

"The Maldives welcomes the decision by several countries to recognize Palestine. We call on those nations that have not done so to adhere to the stance to support the Palestinian people in their quest to establish an independent and sovereign State," the post stated.

In 2024, several countries have taken significant steps in recognizing Palestinian statehood. Among these, Norway, Spain, and Ireland officially recognized Palestine, joining a growing list of nations advocating for Palestinian sovereignty. Additionally, the Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, and Barbados extended their recognition this year, urging others to align with this stance.

Countries that had previously recognized Palestinian statehood include Sweden, which became the first European Union member state to do so in 2014, as well as India, Russia, China, Brazil, South Africa, and numerous nations across the Middle East and Africa. These countries have taken a firm stand in acknowledging Palestine as a sovereign entity, advocating for its right to self-determination.

The Maldives' call for broader international recognition comes at a crucial time, as the Palestinian territories continue to face significant political and humanitarian challenges.
