Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom has stated that DNA testing can be used as circumstantial evidence for proving paternity.
In a tweet today, President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom has said that using other means not specified in Shariah to find out about something is not forbidden. He also added that it is a Sunnah to use the movement of the sun, to identify the prayer timing, but nowadays, astrology is used to identify prayer timings.
“Hence there is no reason to avoid using DNA testing as circumstantial evidence for proving paternity,” said Maumoon in his tweet.
He further added that scientific evidence like fingerprints is already in use as circumstantial evidence in court hearings.
In response to Maumoon, Dr. Iyaz stated that DNA testing can be used to prove paternity or can be negated as well.
Maumoon has been seen defending his statement on Twitter with proof and evidence to many people who claim to be Maldivian Islamic scholars.
