President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has declared Thursday, June 20, a government holiday, according to a directive issued by the President's Office today.

This decision follows adjustments to the Islamic calendar made by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, which declared the commencement of Dhul Hijjah on June 7, 2024, after the crescent moon sighting for the month of Dhul Hijjah 1445.

Consequently, Arafat Day will be observed on Saturday, June 15, 2024, with Eid al-Adha celebrations commencing on Sunday, June 16, 2024. The government had previously designated June 17, 18, and 19 as holidays for the Eid al-Adha festivities.

The additional holiday on June 20 is intended to mitigate any potential inconvenience the public may face in returning from their holidays. In line with this decision, the government will resume operations on Sunday, June 23, 2024.
