In a bid to fortify the landscape of journalism in the Maldives, Youth Minister Ibrahim Waheed has announced plans to convene with media stakeholders to deliberate on the implementation of state budget funding for the media sector. This initiative is a core component of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's steadfast dedication to fostering reputable and independent journalism across the nation.
In a recent video statement, Minister Waheed underscored the imperative of establishing transparent rules and procedures governing the allocation of these funds. These protocols will be formulated in close collaboration with senior editors representing both online and print media, alongside key figures from television networks and other influential industry leaders.
"We endeavored to extend financial support to the media upon assuming office, but regrettably, the previous government failed to earmark funds in the budget. Presently, we are diligently crafting next year's budget," (loosely translated) explained Minister Waheed, accentuating the critical need for transparent and efficient disbursement mechanisms.
The minister highlighted that the overarching objective of this initiative is to bolster reputable, independent journalism while safeguarding against undue influence or control by vested interests. Such a move is deemed essential in preserving and enhancing press freedom within the Maldives.
President Muizzu had previously pledged to allocate a specific percentage of the state budget to support private media entities, citing the limitations imposed by reliance on sponsorship fees from government-affiliated enterprises. By directing state budgetary resources to independent media outlets and journalism organizations, the government aims to cultivate a more liberated and accountable environment for journalists to thrive.
