Home Minister Ali Ihusan has revealed that 46 individuals attempting repeated thefts in the capital have been stopped 4,000 times. His comments come amid rising concerns about a large network of thieves in the city, exacerbated by the release of over 400 prisoners by the previous government.
Minister Speaking to the 241 Committee of the Parliament, Committee on National Security Services, Minister Ihusan provided detailed information about the ongoing issue. He stated that these 46 individuals have interacted with the police 4,000 times but face a convoluted legal process. Arrested thieves often end up being shuffled between courts, with jurisdictional issues and positive urine tests complicating matters further.
Ihusan explained that some thieves are released because the courts claim no jurisdiction over their cases. This legal maze has allowed many offenders to remain at large, posing a continuous challenge for law enforcement.
In an effort to tackle the problem, Ihusan noted that the police have been focusing on 21 of the most critical cases over the past week. Ten individuals have been sent to the National Drug Agency for treatment, while four are in police custody. The search for the remaining suspects continues, with police hopeful that the arrest of these key individuals will significantly improve the security situation in the city.
