A total of 2,069 foreigners have been deported from the Maldives since November, according to the Maldives Immigration.
Controller General of Immigration Mohamed Shamaan Waheed revealed the figures at a news conference today. He stated that 118 foreigners were arrested in a recent raid targeting illegal immigrants.
In addition, 141 foreigners have been deported for drug and gang-related activities, and 65 for prostitution in the past eight months.
The Immigration authority also reported that foreigners have been arrested and deported for extensive black market foreign currency transactions and for altering visas or documents.
In late June, the Maldives Immigration and the Maldives Police Service launched a joint operation to track down illegal foreigners. The operation aims to identify and deport foreigners engaged in self-employment without valid permits and those working outside permitted activities. Controller General Waheed emphasized that these efforts are in accordance with the prescribed procedures.
