Mohamed Elsayed, a 26-year-old Egyptian wrestler competing in the Olympics, was arrested by French police early Friday morning. The arrest took place around 5 a.m. in the 13th district of Paris after Elsayed was accused of groping a woman in a bar, according to the Paris prosecutor's office.
Elsayed, who won a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics, was defeated by Azerbaijan’s Hasrat Jafarov in the 67 kg Greco-Roman wrestling category on Wednesday. Jafarov later claimed the bronze medal in this year’s Games.
French newspaper Le Parisien reported that Elsayed was “roaring drunk” at the time of the incident. The current status of Elsayed’s release from custody is not yet clear.
