The Gaza Health Ministry reported Thursday that the death toll from the Israel-Hamas conflict has now exceeded 40,000.

This alarming milestone underscores the severe impact of the Israeli offensive, which has also resulted in 92,401 injuries and displaced over 85 percent of Gaza’s population. The ministry’s figures reflect the extensive casualties and devastation inflicted by the ongoing conflict.

The war, which began on October 7, 2023, following a series of Hamas-led attacks on southern Israel, has seen significant loss.

The Health Ministry’s latest report indicates a death toll of 40,005, but officials warn that the actual number could be higher as many bodies are still buried under rubble. The overwhelming number of casualties and the chaos of the conflict have complicated efforts to provide accurate figures.

The Israeli military's campaign in Gaza has resulted in widespread destruction, with nearly 60 percent of Gaza’s structures damaged or destroyed by early July. This has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis, with severe shortages of food and sanitation, and significant damage to infrastructure. The conflict has also led to makeshift burials and deteriorating living conditions for the displaced.

Concerns about a broader regional conflict persist as skirmishes continue between Hezbollah and Israeli forces along the Lebanon-Israel border. Over 500 people have died in these exchanges, including both fighters and civilians. As international mediators push for a ceasefire, the scale of the humanitarian disaster and the high number of casualties highlight the urgent need for a resolution to the conflict.
