Parliament has voted to dismiss Prosecutor General Hussein Shameem, despite his prior resignation from the position.
According to Shameem, he had submitted his resignation before the parliamentary vote, but Vice-President of the Parliament, MP Ahmed Nazim confirmed that the letter had not been received by either the President’s Office or Parliament at that time.
However, the impeachment motion was passed by Parliament with a decisive vote: 65 members voted in favor of Shamim’s removal, nine opposed, and one abstained.
Shameem had criticized the impeachment process, arguing that keeping his defense secret from the public violated principles of justice. He had resigned in protest, citing Article 226 of the Constitution.
