The Government of the Republic of Maldives has issued a strong condemnation of recent remarks made by an Israeli minister advocating for the construction of a synagogue within the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

In a statement released on August 27, 2024, the Maldivian government denounced the proposal, calling it a provocative action that threatens to exacerbate religious tensions and destabilize the Middle East.

The Al-Aqsa Mosque, a site of profound religious and historical significance for over 1.8 billion Muslims worldwide, is a focal point of Islamic heritage and worship. The Maldives' government urged Israel to respect the mosque’s historical and legal status, in alignment with international law and United Nations resolutions.

The Maldivian statement highlighted that such statements from high-ranking Israeli officials undermine peace efforts in Gaza and risk inflaming further religious conflict. The government emphasized the necessity for the international community to act swiftly to prevent any changes to the legal status of Jerusalem and its sacred sites.

Additionally, the Maldives reaffirmed its support for the Palestinian people's right to self-determination and reiterated its commitment to the establishment of an independent and sovereign State of Palestine based on pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. The Maldives called on global leaders to take decisive measures to protect Palestinian rights and support peace efforts in the region.
