Adam Athuhar, who was in custody related to the kidnapping of a woman, has died while undergoing treatment.
Athuhar was found hanging in his jail cell and was subsequently placed on a ventilator but died at 16:08 PM today.
According to police reports, there was a 23-minute between the discovery of Athuhar in his cell and his transfer to IGMH hospital. The National Integrity Commission (NIC) and the Human Rights Commission (HRC) have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
The incident follows a series of events involving Athuhar. He was stopped by police while trying to flee on a motorcycle with the kidnapped woman. The police used a baton to subdue him, and he was initially treated at ADK Hospital before being discharged.
Athuhar was later taken to IGMH on Friday for vomiting and treated under observation. He was then arrested and transferred to Dunidu custodial jail following a court order.
An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of Athuhar's death. The IGMH hospital has confirmed his death, and the NIC and HRC are continuing their investigation.
