Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan has affirmed that police will fully enforce new directives issued by the President aimed at improving road safety. Ihusaan’s comments follow a tragic accident involving Prison Lance Corporal Hassan Samah, who was serving with the Maldives Correctional Service and died in a road incident in Hulhumalé yesterday.
In response to the incident, the President has mandated several measures to enhance road safety. These include immediate stops for vehicles exceeding speed limits, with both the driver’s license and vehicle to be seized by the police. Additionally, the President has instructed the police to bolster efforts in enforcing traffic laws and regulations.
Minister Ihusaan emphasized that the police are committed to implementing these directives comprehensively. "The police will fully adhere to the President’s orders to ensure greater road safety," Ihusaan said.
Data from the police department reveals that from January to August this year, there have been 1,907 reported road accidents. Of these, 1,166 occurred within the city, 413 in Hulhumalé, and five in Villimale’.
