The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has reiterated that taxis will not be registered without a designated garage.

In a post shared on the ministry's official X (formerly Twitter) account, officials clarified that last week's amendment to the taxi regulations reversed a prior change made in late 2023. The previous amendment had allowed taxis to be registered for MVR 10,000 without requiring a garage until the end of 2023.

However, the Ministry stated that this amendment has now been withdrawn, following a recommendation from the Attorney General’s Office on November 9, 2023, which concluded that the change was not legally viable. The ministry also noted that the amendment was never implemented.

Under the revised regulations, taxis can now only be licensed and registered through a taxi center, maintaining stricter controls. As a result, private cars offering taxi services in the Maldives must register with a licensed taxi center.

This decision marks the government's ongoing efforts to regulate the taxi industry and ensure that proper guidelines are followed for the safety and reliability of public transport services.
