In a statement marking the 59th anniversary of the Maldives’ admission to the United Nations, Former President of the United Nations General Assembly and former Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid emphasized the nation’s growing role on the global stage.

Shahid posted on X, highlighting that the UN remains the most crucial multilateral forum for the Maldives. Over the decades, the country has demonstrated leadership and actively contributed to addressing global challenges within the UN framework.

"As we approach six decades of UN membership, my hope is that the Maldives will continue to be guided by the UN Charter and its principles, maintaining an active role in the international arena," Shahid said.



The Maldives joined the United Nations on September 21, 1965, shortly after gaining independence. Since then, the nation has engaged in various global discussions, particularly climate change and sustainable development, showcasing its commitment to international cooperation.

On 7 June 2021, Shahid was elected as the 76th President of the United Nations General Assembly with an overwhelming 75 percent majority, receiving 143 votes in favor, further solidifying the Maldives' commitment to international cooperation and dialogue.
