India and the Maldives conducted a virtual inauguration ceremony today as part of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s ongoing state visit to India.

The event marked significant milestones in the economic and security cooperation between the two countries, culminating in the adoption of a "Vision for Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership" and the announcement of the refit of the Maldivian Coast Guard ship, Huravee, with Indian assistance on a gratis basis.

Among the key highlights was the virtual launch of the Rupay Card via a video presentation, a move aimed at enhancing financial connectivity between the two nations. In addition, the inauguration of the new runway at Hanimaadhoo International Airport took place, further solidifying bilateral collaboration in infrastructure development. Another crucial moment was the handover of 700 completed social housing units, built under the Buyers Credit facility of the EXIM Bank of India, to the Maldivian government.



During the ceremony, both sides exchanged several important agreements and Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), strengthening cooperation in areas such as currency exchange, policing, corruption prevention, judicial training, and youth affairs. Notable agreements include:

1. Currency Swap Agreement between the Maldives Monetary Authority and the Reserve Bank of India.

2. MoU on Police Cooperation between the National College of Policing and Law Enforcement of the Maldives and Rashtriya Raksha University.

3. MoU on Corruption Prevention between the Anti-Corruption Commission of the Maldives and the Central Bureau of Investigation of India.

4. Extension of the Judicial Training MoU between the Judicial Services Commission of the Maldives and the National Judicial Academy of India.

5. Extension of the Sports Cooperation MoU between the Government of the Maldives and India’s Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

President Muizzu and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi jointly oversaw the exchange of documents between officials, reaffirming their shared commitment to fostering deeper ties in economic, security, and social sectors.
