Ahmed Azaan, Member of Parliament for Hithadhoo Central Constituency, has assured that the government will always make decisions in the best interest of the Maldives, particularly during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to India. His comments come in response to criticism directed at the government's shifting policies towards India.

Azaan emphasized that President Muizzu, accompanied by his wife and a high-level government delegation, is engaging in discussions aimed at addressing key national issues. He responded to concerns that the government is reversing its previous stance and signing agreements with India, which the opposition has criticized.

In a post on social media, Azaan stated, “President Dr. Muizzu has not signed any agreement during his visit that would affect the Maldives' independence and sovereignty.” He added that while discussions are necessary, they are conducted in a manner that prioritizes the Maldives' needs.

He pointed out that one of the primary objections raised involved the presence of Indian troops in the Maldives. However, he noted that shortly after President Muizzu took office, the government successfully negotiated the withdrawal of Indian troops stationed in the country.

Azaan also drew attention to the difference in foreign policy between the current administration and the previous one, stating that under the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) government, the foreign policy appeared to prioritize “India Only.” In contrast, President Muizzu's government is adopting a “Maldives First” approach, where the nation's interests will take precedence in its dealings with foreign nations.

He also criticized individuals who are currently raising concerns about the presence of Indian military personnel, stating that many of them previously denied their existence or downplayed their impact on the Maldives’ sovereignty.

Azan reassured the public that the current government is committed to protecting the Maldives' independence and sovereignty, making it clear that no actions will be taken that could undermine these core values.
