The Maldivian government has announced plans to introduce a special insurance scheme aimed at supporting national team players. Sports Minister Abdullah Rafiu made the announcement during the 2024 Sports Awards ceremony held last night.
The new insurance initiative is designed to assist athletes in obtaining timely medical treatment for injuries incurred during competitions. Minister Rafiu confirmed that the necessary funds for this scheme have been earmarked for inclusion in the next year’s budget.
In addition to the insurance scheme, Minister Rafiu highlighted that a system was implemented in February to ensure immediate medical assistance for players injured during tournaments. He reiterated the government’s commitment to providing resources and opportunities for sports associations and athletes.
To date, the government has invested MVR 255 million in promoting sports, which marks the highest expenditure in this sector over the past year. This funding has primarily focused on developing sports facilities across the country.
The minister also noted that the Maldives has hosted nine international tournaments from January to October 2024, with two more scheduled for later this year. National teams have participated in 74 international sports events since November of last year, securing 22 medals, including nine gold, nine silver, and four bronze.
The introduction of this insurance scheme is a significant step toward enhancing athlete safety and well-being, reflecting the government’s ongoing commitment to the growth and support of sports in the Maldives.
