Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) President Abdulla Shahid has called on the youth to take a stand against what he describes as the government’s restrictions on their rights.
Shahid made these remarks in a post on X (formerly Twitter) in commemoration of Youth Day.
Shahid highlighted the significance of Youth Day, which marks the adoption of the 2008 Constitution that granted every citizen over the age of 18 the right to vote and run for office. He noted that the day was declared Youth Day by former President Mohamed Nasheed, in recognition of the MDP’s long-standing commitment to protecting the rights of young people.
In his message, Shahid expressed concern over the government's alleged efforts to restrict the rights of 18-year-olds and called on youth to actively defend their rights. He emphasized the importance of maintaining the freedoms that were earned through years of struggle and sacrifice.
The MDP president also urged Maldivian youth to remain vigilant and committed to safeguarding the progress made in ensuring their rights, particularly in the face of challenges such as unemployment, limited access to education, and political representation.
