Vice President His Excellency Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef has urged the Commonwealth to take decisive and unified action in response to the escalating global climate crisis.

Speaking at the CHOGM Climate Breakfast: Building Consensus for Climate Finance Targets in the Commonwealth, Vice President Latheef highlighted the disproportionate impact of global warming on vulnerable populations, particularly within the Commonwealth nations.

In his address, the Vice President stressed the critical need for mobilizing predictable, adequate, and sustainable climate finance to support ambitious climate initiatives. He called for a new collective quantified goal on climate finance that surpasses the previously agreed USD 100 billion per year. This goal, he emphasized, should include dedicated funding for loss and damage response, mitigation, and adaptation to ensure comprehensive support for the most affected countries.

Vice President Latheef also emphasized the need for reforming the international financial architecture to better serve the development needs of vulnerable nations, especially Small Island Developing States (SIDS) like the Maldives. He acknowledged the barriers faced by many Commonwealth nations in accessing necessary climate funds and praised the Commonwealth Climate Finance Access Hub for its vital support to countries like the Maldives.

As the world looks toward COP29, Vice President Latheef called for the swift agreement on a new collective goal for climate finance. He further urged Commonwealth nations to submit ambitious Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) in alignment with the global stocktake, advocating for a renewed commitment to keeping the global temperature rise within the 1.5-degree pathway.

The Climate Breakfast, organized by the Commonwealth Secretariat, took place as part of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) held in Apia, Samoa. Vice President Latheef is leading the Maldives delegation to the summit, where he continues to push for stronger international action to combat climate change and protect future generations.

The Vice President concluded his remarks by calling on the Commonwealth to act decisively for the well-being of people and the planet, urging members to commit to climate finance and the broader environmental goals necessary to safeguard the future.
