Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Abdulla Khaleel emphasized the urgent need for collective action on climate resilience during his participation in the Pre-CHOGM.
This meeting took place in the margins of the Commonwealth Heads of the Government Meeting being held in Apia Samoa, from 22-26 October 2024.
In his address, Minister Dr. Khaleel reaffirmed the Maldives' commitment to championing the priorities of Small Island Developing States (SIDS). He highlighted the importance of building resilient societies, establishing strong democratic institutions, and fostering resilient economies.
Dr. Khaleel urged Commonwealth nations to enhance collaboration in scaling up climate finance and implementing the Antigua and Barbuda Agenda for SIDS (ABAS), which focuses on economic resilience and debt sustainability. He also stressed the critical need to protect democratic values and support vulnerable communities in light of global conflicts.
Expressing gratitude for the Commonwealth's support, Dr. Khaleel assured that the Maldives is dedicated to strengthening its relationship with the organization while upholding its core values and principles.
