Former Member of Parliament for Central Henveiru, Ali Azim, has urged President Dr. Mohammed Muizzu not to undermine the hard-earned reforms that have shaped the nation’s progress. His remarks come in response to the government's proposed amendment that seeks to give the President the authority to appoint the President and Vice-President of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and the Election Commission (EC).
Expressing concern over this proposed amendment, Azim emphasized the importance of preserving the constitutional system and democratic foundations that the people of the Maldives have achieved in the 21st century. He implored the President to reconsider his actions, stating that he should not put the country behind.
Azim's comments coincide with Attorney General Ahmed Usham's defense of the government’s proposal. Usham explained that the government aims to streamline the appointment process for key independent institutions, suggesting that the changes would promote better governance.
The last MDP government had previously amended the law to enable the President to appoint the President and Vice-President of the Civil Service. The current proposal extends this authority to the EC and ACC, although any such decisions will be submitted to Parliament for approval.
As discussions surrounding the proposed amendments continue, Azim’s statements reflect a broader concern for the future of governance and democratic integrity in the Maldives.
