The government of the Maldives has issued a strong condemnation regarding the country's participation in the Miss Universe pageant, expressing its disapproval of the decision.

In a statement released today, the Youth Ministry highlighted that participating in this event contradicts the moral standards and principles valued by the Maldivian people. The ministry stressed that such actions are unacceptable and should not represent the nation.

"The Government of the Maldives condemns activities that seek to represent our nation in such a manner. We urge those considering participation in such events to reconsider their decisions," the Youth Ministry stated.

Maryam Shaina Naseem, a 21-year-old model, is set to make history by representing the Maldives in the prestigious Miss Universe pageant. Her impressive background includes winning the Top Model Maldives title in 2022 and competing in the Top Model of the World competition held in Egypt last year. Shaina's experience has positioned her for this significant opportunity to showcase her home country in the 73rd edition of Miss Universe.

The final round of the Miss Universe pageant is scheduled for November 16 in Mexico City, where contestants from 130 countries will participate. Shaina is the 108th contestant to join this year’s lineup. The Embassy of Mexico in India has facilitated a visa for Shaina, ensuring her ability to compete.

However, the Youth Ministry clarified that it does not bear the responsibility for supporting a national representative's involvement in such contests. Officials have urged citizens to refrain from participating in such pageants, further solidifying the government's stance against the event.
