President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has committed to significantly boosting the operational capacity of the Maldives’ armed forces in the coming year. This assurance came during his national address at the official Victory Day celebration, where he outlined a series of initiatives aimed at strengthening national security.
In his address, President Muizzu emphasized the administration's ongoing efforts to build the capability of the armed forces and the Ministry of Defense, focusing on safeguarding the Maldives’ sovereignty and independence. As part of this vision, the President announced a nationwide program dedicated to youth training, aiming to foster new generations prepared to support national defense.
President Muizzu revealed plans to expand the Girifushi Training Center, the primary facility for armed forces training. Under the government’s New Policy Initiatives, 13 hectares of land will be reclaimed at Girifushi, along with the construction of shore protection and a new port to enhance its training and operational capacity.
Recognizing the need for a strong and modernized military, the President pledged to invest in weaponry and essential equipment. He noted ongoing discussions with allied nations to support this expansion and revealed that a significant portion of next year’s budget would be allocated toward arms procurement.
President Muizzu further outlined plans to modernize the armed forces, specifically through the establishment of an Air Corps and the addition of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), enabling Maldives to better monitor its exclusive economic zone (EEZ). He also highlighted the induction of the Special Boat Squadron on Sunday, marking an important enhancement of Coast Guard services. To further strengthen maritime defense, the Coast Guard fleet will be doubled under a dedicated program, with full jurisdiction now assigned to the Coast Guard over Kandu Oy Giri.
The President assured that with international assistance, all Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) stations across the nation would be fortified and equipped to effectively address emerging security challenges. He expressed confidence that these strategic upgrades would reinforce the Maldives’ resilience and capability to protect the nation.
