Kendhoo MP Mauroof Zakir has raised concerns that the government’s sudden push to amend the Political Parties Act is an attempt to establish autocratic control. His remarks came during today’s parliamentary debate on a bill proposing fines of MVR 100,000 for individual members of political parties found to be violating the Act.

MP Mauroof questioned the timing and motive behind the amendment, pointing out that no recent illegal activities by political parties had triggered such action. He expressed concern over the abruptness of the bill, speculating that it was a move to curb the influence of political parties and silence opposition voices.

“When we think about these things, it really appears that the Honorable President is steering towards an autocratic approach,” Mauroof said, emphasizing that this legislation could be part of a broader effort to consolidate power. He further criticized the government for allegedly attempting to bring independent institutions under the President's control, suggesting that the increased fines are intended to keep political parties in check rather than maintain order.

MP Mauroof concluded that the proposed amendment represents an overreach that threatens the democratic integrity of the Maldives, adding that imposing heavy penalties is “not the solution.”
