The Maldives and Turkey have signed an agreement to strengthen trade relations between the two countries. The Ministry of Economic Development released a statement on the agreement, which was reached during discussions held during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s recent visit to Turkey in November 2023.
Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed signed the agreement on behalf of the Maldivian government, while Trade Minister Professor Dr. Imar Bolat represented Turkey. The Ministry highlighted that during the meeting, President Muizzu and Turkish officials explored opportunities for deepening economic ties, with discussions spanning areas such as trade, investment, renewable energy, and higher education.
As part of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) signed today, both nations agreed to implement concessions on Maldivian fish exports to Turkey, reduce trade barriers, and strengthen trade links.
The Ministry of Economic Development stated that this agreement will enhance trade between the Maldives and Turkey, offering Maldivian fish exporters new avenues to expand in the Turkish market, and fostering increased economic cooperation.
