Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam has stated that the challenges faced by fishermen in the Maldives will be addressed within the next three years, with the guidance and direction of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the project to establish fuel storage in all atolls, Minister Shiyam emphasized that the goal is to resolve the longstanding issues in the fisheries industry during the first three years of the government’s term. Under President Muizzu’s leadership, the government seeks to move away from temporary fixes and implement permanent, sustainable solutions to the sector’s challenges.
Minister Shiyam highlighted that when President Muizzu assumed office, the fisheries sector was struggling, with many of its challenges being addressed through short-term measures. However, the new government is committed to transforming the industry by tackling these issues at their root.
He noted that the fishing industry had long been among the most economically disadvantaged, with attempts to resolve its problems often relying on temporary solutions that failed to address the core issues. The new approach, Shiyam explained, involves long-term plans to develop the industry and overcome its difficulties once and for all.
"His efforts to develop the entire industry and address all the challenges will hopefully enable us to tackle the most pressing issues in fisheries within the first three years of his term," said Minister Shiyam, referring to President Muizzu’s comprehensive approach to sectoral reforms.
Additionally, Minister Shiyam outlined a key project initiative that will establish fuel storage facilities in every atoll of the Maldives. As part of the government’s efforts to support fishermen, the project aims to make fuel more accessible and affordable, with the President’s promise to provide fuel at STO prices being a central part of the initiative.
