The Maldives Immigration Department has arrested 13 foreign nationals for illegal immigration following a special operation carried out on November 6.
The operation, which aimed to identify and apprehend individuals residing in the country without valid visas, involved raids at two separate locations. During the raids, the Immigration Department discovered that the arrested individuals had been staying in the Maldives illegally.
The suspects are now facing charges for overstaying their visas and residing unlawfully in the country, the Immigration Department confirmed in a statement.
The department also noted the growing challenge of illegal immigration in the Maldives, citing gaps in existing laws that complicate enforcement efforts. As part of ongoing efforts to address this issue, more than 4,000 foreign nationals have been deported over the past year.
According to Immigration Department records, between November 17 of last year and November 17 of this year, a total of 4,054 illegal immigrants were deported from the Maldives.
The authorities continue to work on tightening immigration controls to prevent illegal stays and ensure compliance with visa regulations.
