President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced today that the government will develop the northern and southern regions of the Maldives as integrated development zones. This Is in response to recent criticism regarding excluding certain major islands from the urban center development list.

In a statement on X addressing these concerns, President Muizzu highlighted that his manifesto’s Chapter 4, points 12, 13, and 14, clearly outlines the government’s plan for urban development. “Under the Sustainable Regional Development Policy, a Northern Integrated Development Zone comprising the three northernmost atolls and a Southern Integrated Development Zone comprising the four southernmost atolls will be developed,” the President said.

The government’s plan includes establishing seven urban centers—three on islands north of Malé and four on islands south of Malé.

“These initiatives will be part of a 20-year development master plan, formulated with input from island residents, professionals, councils, and all relevant stakeholders,” President Muizzu stated, emphasizing the importance of inclusive planning.

The President also noted that those who misinterpret or ignore the facts surrounding these initiatives are accountable for using such matters for political gain.

The Housing Ministry confirmed today that urban centers will be developed on the following islands: R. Ungoofaaru, B. Eydhafushi, Lh. Naifaru, Adh. Mahibadhoo, F. Nilandhoo, Dh. Kudahuvadhoo, and L. Fonadhoo. Designating these urban centers is part of the government’s broader goal to achieve balanced, sustainable development across the country.
