President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that construction of the Maldives’ first dedicated cancer hospital will begin in 2025, marking a significant advancement in the nation’s healthcare sector.
In his Republic Day address at Dharubaaruge, the President emphasized the importance of establishing a specialized facility for cancer treatment, noting that cancer care should not be a secondary service within general hospitals. He highlighted the urgent need for a comprehensive, dedicated facility and confirmed that consultations with relevant partners are underway to ensure the project progresses smoothly. Despite previous skepticism from some about the need for a cancer hospital, President Muizzu reiterated his administration’s commitment to addressing critical healthcare gaps for the Maldivian people.
President Muizzu also shared updates on other healthcare initiatives, including developing a mental health hospital in Laamu and a specialized women’s and children’s healthcare facility in Hulhumalé. Additionally, the ongoing upgrades to Dharumavantha Hospital in Malé and Hulhumalé Hospital are set for completion by mid-November. This will raise both facilities to tertiary-level standards, expanding access to advanced medical services.
Turning to transportation, the President highlighted progress in expanding the Rapid Transit Link (RTL) network, which is expected to reach all provinces by 2025. He also confirmed continued efforts to develop sustainable regional airports nationwide to support economic growth and inter-island connectivity.
In response to congestion issues in the capital, the President announced that road modernization projects for Malé and Villimalé are in the planning stages, with construction expected to commence soon. The President further revealed that 2025 will be a landmark year for inter-island connectivity, with planned bridge construction projects to link islands to facilitate travel and economic integration across the Maldives.
With these initiatives, President Muizzu reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to a future-focused approach, prioritizing comprehensive healthcare and improved connectivity to better serve the Maldivian people.
