President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu participated in the opening session of the World Leaders Climate Action Summit at the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), held under the theme “In Solidarity For A Green World.” This year's COP29 is a vital platform for the Maldives to highlight its climate resilience efforts and sustainable development initiatives.
As a consistent advocate for Small Island Developing States (SIDS), President Muizzu has prioritized raising awareness about the climate challenges facing the Maldives. This marks his second appearance at a UNFCCC COP since taking office in November 2023. At COP28, President Muizzu presented a forward-looking climate agenda, pledging to plant five million trees nationwide and setting a goal to source 33% of the country’s electricity from renewable energy within five years.
The agenda at COP29 focuses on key areas such as establishing a new collective climate finance goal, enhancing international cooperation, and removing barriers to the development of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) essential for climate progress.
Before the opening session, President Muizzu joined other global leaders for a group photograph, symbolizing their unified commitment to climate action. He is expected to deliver his national address later this afternoon, where he will share the Maldives’ specific climate goals and resilience strategies for the future.
