The Maldivian Parliament has approved a bill banning the use of vapes in the Maldives, marking a significant step in the country's tobacco control efforts.
Proposed by North Henveiru MP Ahmed Aifan, the bill passed with 54 votes in favor, while eight members voted against it.
The bill introduces three main amendments to the existing Tobacco Control Act. Starting from December 15, 2024, the sale and use of vapes will be prohibited nationwide, with the minimum age for tobacco-related sales raised to 21. The new legislation also includes severe penalties for violators, aiming to curb the use of tobacco and vaping products, especially among younger individuals.
The passage of this bill reinforces the Maldives' commitment to addressing public health concerns related to tobacco and vaping products.
