Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih declared that the country is in crisis, urging citizens to come together to "save the nation" at a rally organized by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) at Artificial Beach tonight.
Addressing the crowd, President Solih highlighted the nation's severe issues, likening the situation to a collapse and expressing concern over the current state of affairs. He emphasized that the Maldives is on a path to failure if immediate action is not taken. He stressed that this is the time for everyone to unite and save the country.
Solih criticized the government, accusing it of increasing political appointments while failing to maintain transparency. He claimed that development projects have stalled and that there have been attempts to stifle media freedom. According to him, these issues are symptomatic of deeper problems within the administration.
One of his key points was the alarming depreciation of the Maldivian rufiyaa against the dollar, which he said has significantly strained the economy. Solih asserted that the MDP would stand firm in fighting for the people and steer the country towards a path that aligns with the public's aspirations. He stated that the MDP will take the country in the direction the people want.
Encouraging the public to act swiftly, he urged them to be brave and go out to do this tonight. If they wait, the challenges will only grow, and they should start this soon with careful planning.
Solih also voiced concerns regarding the lack of transparency in the upcoming national budget. He noted that, for the first time, the budget has been submitted to parliament without sufficient details, leaving lawmakers and citizens in the dark. He highlighted that while a budget of MVR 49 billion was allocated for the current year, it has been spent rapidly over the past eight months, with minimal visible development. He stated that no work is done on even a single island in the Maldives.
In his address, Solih called on citizens to unify and take action, emphasizing that the nation's future depends on collective effort and vigilance in holding the government accountable. He assured the MDP that it would continue fighting for transparency, economic stability, and the well-being of the Maldivian people.
