The Maldives and Azerbaijan have signed two significant bilateral agreements to bolster cooperation during a meeting in Baku, Azerbaijan, on the sidelines of the UNFCCC’s Conference of the Parties (COP29).
The agreements were signed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives, His Excellency Dr. Abdulla Khaleel, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, His Excellency Jayhun Bayramov.
The first agreement, titled the “Agreement on Mutual Exemption of Visa Requirement for Holders of Diplomatic, Service, and Official Passports,” simplifies travel for government officials. Once implemented, Maldivians holding valid Diplomatic and Official passports can enter, transit, and stay in Azerbaijan for up to 90 days without a visa. This step also sets the stage for broader visa exemptions for all Maldivians, which both governments consider positively.
The second agreement, the “Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Cooperation in the Field of Tourism,” aims to promote mutual tourism development, recognizing the sector's significance in enhancing economic, cultural, and social ties between the two nations.
During their discussions, Foreign Minister Dr. Khaleel highlighted the strong friendship between the Maldives and Azerbaijan and expressed his commitment to further deepening bilateral relations. He emphasized that these agreements will strengthen existing ties and foster people-to-people connections, cultural exchanges, and tourism collaboration for mutual benefit. Dr. Khaleel also reiterated the Maldives’ dedication to working closely with Azerbaijan on multilateral platforms.
These agreements significantly enhance Maldives-Azerbaijan relations, reinforcing cooperation across various sectors for shared progress and development.
