The Parliament has passed a significant constitutional amendment to revoke the membership of elected parliamentarians if they switch political parties or are expelled from their parties during their term.

The government introduced the amendment earlier today, and it was passed by the Committee of the Whole Parliament before being approved in a special evening session.

The amendment received 78 votes in favor, while 13 members voted against it. South Galolhu MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem had proposed a motion to conduct an extensive discussion on the amendment before passing it. However, this motion was rejected with 69 votes against and only 11 in support.

The new amendment stipulates that members elected to Parliament on behalf of a political party will automatically lose their membership if they resign from or are expelled from the party they represent. Similarly, independent candidates who join a political party during their term will also forfeit their seats.

This landmark decision underscores the government's effort to enforce political accountability while preserving the integrity of Maldives’ territorial sovereignty.
