The High Court of the Maldives has decided to uphold the judgment rule by the Criminal court against former president Abdulla Yameen.
Criminal Court convicted President Yameen for money laundering in connection with the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) scandal. Under the conviction, Yameen was jailed for five years in 2019, in addition to a fine of USD 5 million.
The Criminal Court conviction was then appealed at the High Court by President Yameen. In the appeal case of President Yameen, the High Court ruled to uphold the judgment rule by the Criminal court. The two Judges' from the Judges' bench of the High Court agreed to uphold the Criminal Court verdict.
The Criminal Court convicted Yameen in 2019 for embezzling with the acquisition costs of G. A. Vodamulla, which was leased, through MMPRC. As per the investigation, the USD 1 million acquisition cost payment was transferred to Yameen's bank account in two transfers of USD 500,000 to a private company named SOF Private Limited.
